‘Mountains in Tahiti’ Paul Gauguin

Introduction to Tahitian Drumming

NEW for Fall 2018!  Transport yourself to the Polynesian Island of Tahiti while discovering your inner drummer.  In this course, you will learn several traditional pehe (rhythms) on the toere, a log drum.  We will start with the basic rudiments of Tahitian drumming and then explore the different parts that go into each pehe.  We will also incorporate other drums that complete the ensemble: the pahu (bass drum), fa’atete (tom tom) and Pahu tupa’i (tall drum). Though this course will focus on traditional pehe, there will be opportunities to explore more modern applications of the drum as well as open jamming.
