One poet asked whether the world would end with a bang or a whimper. Another suggested perhaps it would be by fire or ice. Who knows? We will become familiar with destruction myths from several different cultures examining a variety of accounts presenting the demise of the world as we know it. On a more personal and individual level, what happens after we die? Some surprising answers to that age-old query lie in vivid accounts of the afterlife featured in other ancient classical stories. We will read and discuss those myths, but field trips to the various depicted destinations will have to be in imagination only. All materials will be supplied by instructor for any participants not wishing to purchase a used text (Mythology: Contemporary Approaches to Classical and World Myths, by Thury and Devinney, any edition) from an online vendor, usually for less than $10, a great bargain.
